A strip, not a square
Every signature box in banking and railway recruitment is wide and low: IBPS Clerk, IBPS RRB and RRB NTPC all prefer 140 x 60 pixels, an aspect ratio of roughly 2.3:1. If your scan is squarish, the resize will squash the letters, and no amount of file-size tuning fixes that.
Physical box, digital box
RRB gives both halves of the picture: sign inside a 50 mm x 20 mm box and scan at 100 DPI. That arithmetic produces about 197 x 79 px, so the 140 x 60 preference is a slightly tighter crop of the same shape. Knowing this helps when you are working from a printed application form rather than a blank sheet.
What to change if the result looks broken
At 140 px wide there is room for perhaps a dozen distinct strokes. A signature written with a 0.5 mm ballpoint will thin out to broken grey pixels. Use a thicker pen, sign larger, and let the resize do the shrinking — and remember that IBPS explicitly refuses signatures written in capital letters, which is a rejection about handwriting, not resolution.
How it works
- Sign on white paper with a black pen, keeping the signature wide rather than tall.
- Scan at 200 dpi or photograph the paper flat in even light.
- Crop tightly to the ink in a wide strip.
- Resize to 140 x 60 px.
- Export as JPG between 10 and 20 KB, or up to 40 KB for RRB.
- Zoom in once to confirm the strokes are still continuous.
