Source: Photo and Signature Scan & Upload Process (Sarathi, MoRTH) (undated PDF on the live Sarathi portal, read September 2026). checked on 2026-09-06. The PDF prints the signature width as '35cm' where 35 mm (1.4 inch) is meant — an internal typo in the official document.

Specifications change between recruitment cycles. Always check the current official notification before you upload.

Both files share one small budget

The Sarathi upload process document gives the photograph 10-20 KB and gives the signature the same 10-20 KB. That is the tightest photo allowance of any document on FileKB — banks allow 50 KB, NTA allows 200 KB. The saving grace is that Sarathi also tells you the pixel box, 420 x 525 px, and once you resize to it the file lands in range without visible damage.

A typo worth knowing about

The same document prints the signature width as "35cm x 1.06cm" while also giving 1.4 x 0.44 inch. Thirty-five centimetres is a third of a metre; the intended figure is 35 millimetres. We flag it here because a resizer that took the number literally would produce a wildly wrong file, and because it is a good reminder to sanity-check official tables rather than copy them blindly.

Scanner settings matter more than usual

Sarathi asks for at least 300 ppi in True Colour, a photo no more than six months old, a light or preferably white background, and no reflections on spectacles. For applicants who cannot sign, the document specifies a thumb impression with a gender-based hand: right thumb for women, left thumb for men.

How it works

  1. Take a passport-style photo on a light or white background within the last six months.
  2. Crop to the 35 x 45 mm shape and resize to 420 x 525 px at 300 dpi.
  3. Export as JPG between 10 and 20 KB.
  4. Sign with a black pen on white paper and crop tight to the ink.
  5. Resize the signature to 256 x 64 px and export it between 10 and 20 KB.
  6. Upload both files on the Sarathi service page for your application.

Upload errors and how to fix them

Photo size must be between 10 KB and 20 KB
Resize to 420 x 525 px first. At that size a moderate JPEG quality setting lands around 15 KB; compressing a full-resolution photo to 20 KB looks far worse.
Signature file too large
The signature box is only 256 x 64 px. Crop to the ink, resize to that box, and the file usually falls to 8-12 KB — pad up if it drops under 10 KB.
Photograph older than six months
Sarathi sets a six-month recency rule. Take a fresh photo rather than reusing the one from an old licence application.
Reflection on spectacles
Turn slightly away from the light source or remove the glasses. Sarathi lists reflections as a reason for refusal.

Common questions

What is the driving licence photo size in pixels?
420 x 525 px, which is the 35 x 45 mm print at roughly 300 dpi. The file itself must be a JPG between 10 and 20 KB.
Why does the official PDF say the signature is 35 cm wide?
That is a typo in the document. The same line gives 1.4 inches, which is 35 millimetres. We have recorded the error in the source note rather than repeating an impossible figure.
Reduce photo size online to 20 KB — how do I hit exactly 10-20 KB?
First shrink the pixels (420 x 525), then adjust the quality. FileKB's resize tool takes both a minimum and a maximum, so the file doesn't drop below 10 KB.
Does the thumb impression rule really depend on gender?
Yes, oddly. Sarathi says illiterate applicants give the right-hand thumb if female and the left-hand thumb if male. It is in the official upload process document.
Can I use my Aadhaar photo for a driving licence?
You cannot export an Aadhaar photograph, since it is captured at a centre and never given to you as a file. Take a fresh photo and size it to the Sarathi spec.
