240 x 320 is not a fixed box but a floor: Rajasthan's recruitment portal allows anything from 240 x 320 up to 480 x 640 pixels, as long as the shape stays 3:4.

A range, not a box
Most pixel rules on this site are a single pair of numbers. Rajasthan's recruitment portal publishes a range instead: its upload guide accepts a JPG photograph of minimum 240 x 320 and maximum 480 x 640 pixels, between 50 KB and 100 KB, taken in colour within the last six months, not self-composed on a mobile, with the face occupying at least half the frame. The two bounds are the same 3:4 shape at one and two times scale, so the portal is fixing the aspect ratio and leaving the resolution to you.
Pick the top of the range
The smaller bound is a trap when combined with the 50 KB floor. A 240 x 320 px portrait has only 76,800 pixels, and a clean JPEG of that size is frequently 30-45 KB — under the minimum. Exporting at 480 x 640 quadruples the pixel count and puts an ordinary photo at 60-90 KB, squarely inside the window, with a sharper face on the admit card as a bonus. The preset opens at 240 x 320 because that is the number people search for, but the guide permits the larger size and it is the one to use.
The content rules do the rejecting
Dimensions and bytes are checked by software; the rest is checked by a person at document verification. A photo older than six months, a selfie, or a frame where the face is a small oval in the middle will pass the upload and fail later, which is far more expensive. Crop head and shoulders as you would for a passport, use a plain wall, and have someone else take the picture. How it works
- Take a fresh colour photo (under six months old) with someone else holding the camera, plain background.
- Crop to 3:4 — the preset opens at 240 x 320, the same shape as 480 x 640.
- Keep the face at least half the height of the frame with a little space above the head.
- Resize to 480 x 640 if the 240 x 320 export falls under 50 KB; both are inside the allowed range.
- Export as JPG and confirm the file is between 50 and 100 KB.
- Save it with the date taken; the portal's six-month rule means you will need a new one next year.
