350x350 photo — square minimum for the Indian e-Visa
The Indian e-Visa requires a square photo — minimum 350 x 350 px, maximum 1000 x 1000 px, and a file between 10 and 300 KB.

The square that catches Indian applicants out
After years of 3.5 x 4.5 cm forms, a square photo feels wrong. But the Indian e-Visa photo upload process is unambiguous: the height and width of the photo must be equal, with a minimum of 350 x 350 px and a maximum of 1000 x 1000 px, in JPEG, between 10 and 300 KB. The instructions page adds the framing detail — full face, front view, eyes open, head centred, and the head measuring 25 to 35 mm within the picture.
350 is a floor, not a target
Uploading exactly 350 x 350 px leaves no margin. If the portal's face-detection step crops even slightly, you can end up below the minimum. Working at 600 x 600 px keeps you clear of the floor, well under the ceiling, and still lands near 120 KB at good quality.
The same numbers appear in Indian recruitment
We found an identical pixel band in an Assam recruitment annexure: minimum 350 x 350 px, maximum 1000 x 1000 px, 20-300 KB, 24-bit colour, for both the photograph and the signature. So a square export prepared for a visa application is often reusable on state portals that borrowed the same specification.
How it works
- Shoot facing the camera with even light and a plain light or white wall behind you.
- Crop to a perfect square with your head centred and the full head visible.
- Resize to between 350 x 350 and 1000 x 1000 px — 600 x 600 is a safe middle.
- Export as JPEG between 10 and 300 KB.
- Check that no shadow falls on your face or the wall.
- Confirm the head measures roughly a quarter to a third of the frame height.
