Signature 10 to 100 KB — the NTA and UPSC range

NTA and UPSC allow up to 100 KB for the signature — here, keeping the signature clear matters more than shrinking the file.

Signature 10-100 KB specification

RequirementValue
NEET (UG)Signature 10-100 KB, JPG/JPEG, clearly legible
JEE MainSignature 10-100 KB, JPG/JPEG, clearly legible
UPSCSignature 20-100 KB on the uploading sheet, between 350 and 500 pixels, black pen on clean white paper, file named signature
CUETOnly 10-50 KB — do not reuse a 90 KB NTA signature here
Dimensions for NTANo pixel size is published for NEET or JEE Main signatures
Practical sizeA 500 x 170 px crop at high quality lands around 25-40 KB, comfortably inside the range

Source: Information Bulletin — NEET (UG) 2026, National Testing Agency (NEET (UG) 2026). checked on 2026-09-06. Inside the same bulletin the finger and thumb impression file size is given twice: 10-200 KB in the scanned-image table and 50-300 KB later in the text.

Specifications change between recruitment cycles. Always check the current official notification before you upload.

A rare case where you should not compress hard

Most signature specs in India are tight. The NTA exams are not: NEET and JEE Main both allow 10 to 100 KB and ask only that the signature be clearly legible. UPSC's uploading sheet allows 20-100 KB and adds a size range of 350 to 500 pixels.

The floor is the real constraint

With a ceiling that high, nobody fails for being too big. People fail for being too small: a tightly cropped thin-pen signature at 300 px wide can compress to 6 KB, under both the NTA and UPSC minimums. That is why the tool on this page takes a minimum as well as a maximum and tells you when it has padded a file to clear the floor.

Watch the exam-to-exam differences

CUET, from the same agency, stops at 50 KB. UPSC additionally requires black pen on clean white paper and insists the file be named signature. So while one good scan can serve several applications, check each portal's own line before you reuse it — the sizes look similar right up to the moment one of them rejects your file.

How it works

  1. Sign on clean white paper with a black pen, large enough to read at a glance.
  2. Scan or photograph the paper in flat, even light.
  3. Crop tight to the ink, keeping the natural landscape shape.
  4. Resize to roughly 500 x 170 px, or 350-500 px if you are applying to UPSC.
  5. Export as JPG between 10 and 100 KB — 30-40 KB is a good target.
  6. Rename the file to signature.jpg where the portal asks for specific names.

Upload errors and how to fix them

Signature is not clearly legible
You have up to 100 KB, so stop compressing. Rescan at higher quality and crop close to the ink instead of shrinking the image.
Signature file is below the minimum
NTA sets a 10 KB floor and UPSC a 20 KB floor. Raise the quality or pad the file so it clears whichever applies to you.
File name is not signature
UPSC asks for files named photo and signature. Rename before uploading; the portal genuinely checks it.
Signature rejected on a CUET form
CUET stops at 50 KB even though the other NTA exams allow 100 KB. Re-export the same crop at a lower quality for that form.

Which forms ask for this

Common questions

What is the NEET signature size?
10 to 100 KB in JPG or JPEG, and it must be clearly legible. NTA publishes no pixel dimensions for the NEET signature at all.
Can I use the same signature file for NEET, JEE Main and CUET?
For NEET and JEE Main yes. CUET caps the signature at 50 KB, so export a second, lighter copy for that application.
upsc photo sign size — what does the uploading sheet say?
Signature 20-100 KB, jpg, between 350 and 500 pixels, signed with a black pen on clean white paper, and the file must be named signature.
increase signature size in kb online — why would I need that?
Because these portals have floors. A tight crop of a thin signature can land at 6-8 KB, below the 10 KB or 20 KB minimum, so the file has to be padded back up.
Is a photo of my signature acceptable, or must it be scanned?
A phone photo works if the paper is evenly lit, the page is flat and there is no shadow across the ink. Crop out everything except the signature before exporting.
