JEE Main photo size — 10-200 KB scanned photo plus a live capture

JEE Main's upload has two parts: a scanned photo you can prepare in advance, and a live photo captured inside the form itself.

What NTA does and does not publish

The JEE Main 2026 bulletin gives you two file-size windows and a framing rule, and stops there. There is no pixel dimension, no DPI figure and no aspect ratio anywhere in it. That is why a "JEE photo 3.5 x 4.5 cm at 200 DPI" table on a resizer site is invention: the only measurable requirements are 10-200 KB for the photograph, 10-100 KB for the signature, JPG or JPEG, white background, and 80% of the image occupied by your face with ears visible.

The live capture is a separate hurdle

Alongside the scanned photo, the form opens your camera and takes a live photograph with the same 80% face rule against a light background. This is where most "photo not uploading" complaints come from, and no file preparation helps — it is a browser permission and lighting problem. Do the capture on a device with a working camera, in daylight, facing a pale wall.

Reuse the same image later

The photograph you upload follows you to the admit card, the exam centre check and JoSAA counselling. Keep the exported JPEG and a few prints of the identical image rather than shooting a new one at each stage, because a visible mismatch is easier to create than to explain.

How it works

  1. Shoot a passport-style photo against a white wall with even light.
  2. Crop so face and ears occupy about 80% of the frame.
  3. Export as JPG between 10 and 200 KB using the preset below.
  4. Scan or photograph your signature on white paper and export it at 10-100 KB.
  5. Fill the form and complete the live photo capture when prompted.
  6. Save a copy of both files — the same images are reused for counselling.

Upload errors and how to fix them

jee live photo not uploading — capture window stays blank
Grant camera permission for the NTA domain, close video-call apps holding the camera, and retry on a laptop if a phone browser refuses to open the capture frame.
Photograph does not meet 80% face visibility
Recrop tighter so your face fills most of the frame. NTA judges area, not pixels, so a wide shot fails even at a perfect file size.
File format not supported
Save as JPG or JPEG. Screenshots in PNG and iPhone HEIC files are the two most common uploads that fail silently.
Signature not legible
Sign larger on white paper with a dark pen, then crop to the ink. Do not scale a tiny signature up — rescan it instead.

Which forms ask for this

Common questions

jee mains photo requirements — what is the exact size?
A JPG or JPEG file of 10 to 200 KB, recent, passport style, white background, with 80% of the frame filled by your face including ears. NTA publishes no pixel dimensions for JEE Main at all.
jee photo upload error even though my file is 150 KB. What else could be wrong?
Format and framing. Convert HEIC or PNG files to JPEG, and check the crop: an upload inside the KB range can still be rejected for low face coverage or a coloured background.
Is the JEE Main photo size the same as NEET?
Yes for both files — 10-200 KB photo and 10-100 KB signature. NEET adds finger impressions and a postcard-size print that JEE Main does not ask for.
Do I need to print the JEE Main photo for exam day?
Keep a few passport prints of the same image. The bulletin does not set a postcard requirement like NEET, but centres routinely check that you match the photo on the admit card.
jee main live photo problem on mobile — can I skip it?
No, the live capture is mandatory. If the phone browser will not open the camera, finish the form on a computer with a webcam rather than submitting without it.
