A defence-exam form fails on dates, not bytes

The NDA & NA (I) 2025 notice gives a generous file window — 20 to 300 KB for the photograph and the signature alike — and then attaches two conditions that no compressor can fix. The photograph must carry your name and the date it was taken, and it must be less than ten days old counted from the day the application opened, which for that cycle was 11 December 2024. Candidates who reuse a school photo lose the form at scrutiny stage.

Appearance has to hold until the written exam

UPSC also warns that your appearance at the written examination should match the uploaded photograph, listing beard, moustache and spectacles specifically. If you plan a haircut or new frames, upload after the change rather than before.

Why our preset is tighter than the notice

Both UPSC exams share one upload portal, and the uploading-instructions sheet hosted there prints narrower limits than the notice: 20-200 KB for the photo and 20-100 KB for the signature. Rather than guess which check runs on which day, the preset on this page produces a file that passes both. How it works

  1. Check the application commencement date in the NDA notice and count 10 days back from it — the photo must be newer than that.
  2. Shoot a plain front-view photo with about three-quarters of the frame filled by your face.
  3. Add your name and the shoot date with the caption tool below.
  4. Export as .jpg between 20 and 200 KB so both official ranges are satisfied.
  5. Scan a black-pen signature separately and export it at 20-100 KB.
  6. Upload, then zoom into the preview to confirm the caption survived compression.

Upload errors and how to fix them

Date on photograph is older than permitted
The clock starts on the application commencement date printed in the notice. Shoot a new photo and caption it with the actual date of the shoot.
Photograph does not match the candidate at the examination
Do not shave a beard or change spectacles after uploading. UPSC checks appearance at the written exam and can refuse entry on a mismatch.
Uploaded file exceeds 300 KB
Export around 150-180 KB. That sits inside the notice range and also inside the narrower 200 KB ceiling on the uploading sheet.
Caption text unreadable after compression
Type the name and date in dark, plain letters on a light strip. Fine script and low-contrast grey collapse into mush once JPEG quality drops.

Common questions

Is the name and date rule the same for NDA as for Civil Services?
Yes, the NDA & NA (I) 2025 notice repeats the clause word for word, along with the 10-day recency rule. The only difference between the two exams is which KB range the notice prints.
NDA photo size in KB — what should I aim for?
The notice allows 20-300 KB for both files. Because the upsconline uploading sheet is narrower, aiming at roughly 150 KB for the photo and 60-80 KB for the signature keeps you safe on either check.
Do I need a thumb impression for NDA?
No. The NDA notice asks only for the captioned photograph and the signature. Thumb impressions are a banking-exam requirement, not a UPSC one.
Can I write the name and date by hand on a printed photo and scan it?
It is allowed as long as the text is clearly readable, but handwriting over the photo often blurs when scanned and compressed. Typing the caption digitally is more reliable.
upsc photo name problem — my caption covers my face. Is that a problem?
Yes. Keep the caption in the empty strip below the shoulders. Text over the face reduces the visible face area, which conflicts with the three-quarters coverage rule.
